The Morgan Cup
Many of our County Cups have a storied past and have been named after some of the stalwarts and pioneers of football in Northumberland. The Morgan Cup which is presented to the winners of the U14 County Cup is no exception. It is name after William (Bill) Morgan, who was born in 1888 and passed away in 1990 at the age of 102.
Bill Morgan served on the English Schools Football Association council from 1922 until his retirement in 1955. He served as chairman of the ESFA for two spells, firstly in the 1927/28 season and then again during the Golden Jubilee season of the association in 1953/54. He was later awarded an MBE for his services to schools football.
He grew up in East Northumberland and whilst attending Blyth Grammar School, he played cricket for Seghill. Later, he captained the cricket team at Armstrong College between 1908 and 1910 and played football and cricket for Durham University.
Morgan became secretary of the East Northumberland Football Association in 1915 and shortly after would take the position of secretary and treasurer of Northumberland Schools FA. During his involvement with East Northumberland, they would go onto win the National Cup in 1927 and a certain Bobby Charlton came through the ranks of East Northumberland to gain international schoolboy honours. Mr Morgan would later go on to become headmaster of Guide Post School.
