Northumberland SFA U16 girls 6 Cumbria SFA 0
The U16 Girls started their game in very lively fashion, with Caitlin Hutchinson (Astley) and Ellie Ford (Burnside) settling straight into the game. Several times in the first 10 minutes the two combined to make excellent openings for the attackers running into the box. The best chances fell to Elllie Hartgrove (Astley) and Jessica Brown (St.Thomas More), but unfortunately neither of them could convert them into goals.
North. set up repeated attacks without success with Jessica Brown the fulcrum and she finally made her own opening as she picked up the ball on the edge of the box ran through three or four of the Cumbria defenders, only to see her shot cannon back off the post. Northumberland finally got the break through when Jess split the defenders for Ellie Ford to run on to the ball. Her cross found Kenzy Collingbourne (Gosforth) who converted the cross to make it 1-0.
North. continued to be a handful for Cumbria as shots peppered the Cumbria goal from all directions, but thanks to the Cumbria goalkeeper, the score remained 1-0. The second goal finally arrived when Jess Brown won the ball on the edge of the box and slid a pass through to Caitlin whose cross was put into her own goal by a Cumbria defender. The woodwork was called into action twice in the next 5 minutes as Kenzy and Jess took it in turn to rattle the cross bar and post, but the third goal was not delayed long as some great play by Neve Jameison (J.C.Spence) down the left found Ellie Hartgrove on the edge of the box who opened her account making it 3-0. The fourth goal came soon after when Caitlin applied some great pressure on a Cumbria defender forcing a mistake. Kenzy then pounced onto the loose pass and slotted the ball into the net to make the score 4-0 going into half time.
The second half began more slowly, with Northumberland starting to become complacent and sloppy on the ball as the wind started to swirl around the pitch. Easy things started to become hard as the wind started to carry the ball with the rain falling even heavier until Jess drew a defender out and with the referee playing advantage, Olivia Burnip (Gosforth) picked up the ball on the left. She cut inside onto her right and her shot skidded past the Cumbria goalkeeper for her first goal of the season.
Chances came and went for Northumberland as a mixture of bad finishing and good goal keeping prevented more goals. North’s defenders switched off for a split second when a bad back pass forced Emily Aldcroft (St.Benet Biscop’s) to come rushing from her goal. The Cumbria striker beat her to the ball and took it past her, but her shot was blocked by Mckenzy Darrington (Kenton).
Northumberland still had enough time to grab a sixth as Jess Brown picked up the ball on the edge of the box, curling it with her left foot inside the far post - a well-deserved goal.
A great start to the season for Northumberland with a lot of positives coming out of the game.
