Title: U16 girls defeat old rivals
NSFA Under 16 girls 4  Durham U16 girls 2

Northumberland Schools started very brightly with a goal within 27 seconds of the whistle. A neat through ball from Rebecca Henderson was matched perfectly with Anna Soulsby’s run who kept calm in front of goal and slid the ball past the diving goalkeeper.

This sprung Durham into life as they set up camp in the Northumberland half for the next 10 minutes. With chance after chance battering the Northumberland goal, Grace Ayre and goalkeeper Emily Aldcroft came to Northumberland’s rescue on a number of occasions with last ditch tackles and excellent goalkeeping.

Eventually the Northumberland defence was beaten when an effort from long range beat Emily and nestled in the back of the Northumberland goal to bring the game level at 1-1.

This unsettled Northumberland and at this point Durham were on top. However, with very good Northumberland defending and the midfield working hard they managed to take control of the game again. A through ball to Rebecca Henderson saw the Durham goalkeeper come rushing out of her goal, fouling Rebecca as she rounded the goalkeeper. This resulted in a free kick on the edge of the box. Anna Soulsby stepped up but unfortunately she saw her effort go over the cross bar.

Durham then went on to have several good chances at the Northumberland goal, hitting the angle of the post and cross bar in the meantime.

By this time the game was end to end and a very good Northumberland attack saw Alicia Mutrie fouled 25 yards out from the Durham goal. Megan Farrell stood over the ball. With a precise, drilled free kick it fell to the feet of Rebecca Henderson who took a touch and coolly slid the ball past the on rushing Durham goalkeeper.

Unfortunately, Northumberland couldn’t hold on to the lead. As Durham had already done before they made the game level at 2-2 with another long range effort.

The sides went into half time all level.

Going into the second half either team could have grabbed the next goal. With both teams having excellent chances both defences stood up strongly and put everything in the way of the ball.

Eventually there was a break through and it fell to Erin Nelson for Northumberland. She picked the ball up wide left, went on a mazey run across the edge of the box and released her shot. The shot was too hard for the Durham keeper, the ball squirmed through her hands and into the back of the net. Northumberland took the lead 3-2.

Durham kept peppering the Northumberland goal with long range efforts but Sarah Bambrick was equal to them each time.

The game started to get a bit heated with tackles flying in from both teams. Luckily it was Northumberland that kept their heads and got the fourth goal. Jessica Brown picked the ball up on the half way line and with a brilliant run and a lot of persistence she played a perfect ball with the outside of her right foot to Rebecca Henderson who smashed the ball across the keeper and in to the top of the net.
